One of the suspects, armed with a shotgun, walked into the East Akron bar about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday with a black rag tied across his lower face. He strode up to the bar owner and demanded money from the cash register.
Two off-duty Akron police officers jumped up and the suspect ran. The officers chased after him and fired their guns. The suspect got into a waiting car and escaped. The officers were placed on standard paid leave while the incident is investigated.
Hours later, police arrested Brian C. Goodwin, 34, of Watson Street. He was booked at the Summit County Jail shortly after midnight on five counts of aggravated robbery.
Surveillance and interviews led police to Gumpl, 32, of Perkins Street. He faces the same charges.
